HOUSTON – The Houston Oilers won a second straight title with a 24-14 victory over the Green Bay Packers in the 1961 American Football League-National Football League Championship game.

After a scoreless opening period, the Oilers built a 17-0 advantage by halftime.

Billy Cannon scored twice for the Oilers in the second quarter.

The first touchdown came on a 30-yard pass from George Blanda. The second score was a 2-yard run that capped a 7-play, 70-yard drive at the 3:44 mark.

Houston’s defense stopped the Packers and then Blanda led a 9-play, 73-yard scoring drive in the final two minutes. Blanda’s 25-yard field goal added to Houston’s lead.

In the second half, Houston added its final score on a 9-yard run by Charley Tolar.

Trailing by 24 points, the Packers finally got some offense going as Jim Taylor scored in the third quarter and in the final stanza on 1-yard runs, but it wasn’t nearly enough as the Oilers coasted to the victory.
