NEW YORK – Rick Wise proved to be the difference for Philadelphia as the Phillies advanced to the championship game of the 1970 Strat-O-Matic Tournament with a 6-1 win over the New York Yankees.

The Phillies move on to face the winner of Houston Astros at Minnesota Twins semifinal affair.

Wise (1-0) held the Yankees to six hits with two strikeouts and four walks. New York starter Stan Bahnsen worked five frames as he allowed three runs on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

Tim McCarver‘s solo homer for the Phillies gave them the lead before they added two more runs in the fifth as Byron Browne blasted a homer and Larry Bowa‘s RBI double made it 3-0.

New York’s only run came in the eighth on a double by Bobby Murcer as the Yankees stayed alive.

However, in the top of the ninth it was Wise who delivered the decisive blow with a three-run homer off John Cumberland, who had replaced Jack Aker after his two innings. Lindy McDaniel finished off for the Yankees.

Wise allowed a single in the bottom of the ninth, but that was it as the Phillies will get a shot at the championship.
