NEW YORK – The Philadelphia Phillies got off to a fast start and never looked back on the way to a 7-2 victory over the New York Mets in National League East Championship at Shea Stadium.
Advancing to the semifinals of the 1970 Strat-O-Matic Tournament, the Phillies are scheduled to visit the American League East champion New York Yankees.
Trouble for Mets starter Gary Gentry began in the top of the first as the righthander walked four in the inning, including Tim McCarver and Byron Browne with the bases loaded to help the Phillies take a 2-0 lead.
In the third, Larry Hisle‘s RBI double made it 3-0 before Phillies starting pitcher Chris Short added a sacrifice fly and it was 4-0.
Deron Johnson homered leading off the seventh to end the contest for Gentry. Danny Frisella took over on the mound and then allowed McCarver’s run-scoring triple and sacrifice fly to Browne as the Phillies led by seven.
The Mets finally got to Short in the seventh when Jerry Grote knocked in a run with a single. Donn Clendenon later hit a solo homer in the ninth as Short was able to close out the affair.
For the game, Short surrendered six hits and three walks with a pair of strikeouts. Gentry was charged with five runs on six hits, while walking sixth with three strikeouts. Frisella gave up one hit and two runs in his inning as Tug McGraw tossed scoreless frames in the eighth and ninth.
