BALTIMORE – Mel Stottlemyre did everything he could to lead the New York Yankees to a 1-0 victory over the Baltimore Orioles in the American League East Championship contest of the 1970 Strat-O-Matic Tournament.
In the semifinals, the Yankees will entertain the National League East winner from the Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets match-up.
On the mound, Stottlemyre tossed a two-hitter allowing singles to Orioles starting pitcher Dave McNally in the third and Boog Powell in the ninth. He did have six strikeouts, but survived five walks in blanking the Orioles.
At the plate, Stottlemyre had three hits including driving in New York’s run in the top of the seventh with a single. He had a single in the third and a double in the fifth.
McNally also went the distance for the Orioles as he surrendered nine hits with two strikeouts and no walks.
