Negro League Tournament: 20 Stars at 35 Cubans

Editor’s note: The games in the Negro Leagues Diamond Gems Tournament are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. The designated hitter will not be used for any games. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur.

The 1935 New York Cubans opened the Negro Leagues Diamond Gems B Tournament with a 3-2 victory over the 1920 Detroit Stars.

Neck Stanley (1-0) tossed a six-hitter in his complete game effort for the Cubans with two walks and six strikeouts.

Offensively, the Cubans scored all three of their runs in the fourth inning against Detroit starter Bill Gatewood.

Alejandro Oms had a RBI triple and then scored when Martin Dihigo blasted a homer that made it 3-0.

The Stars picked up their runs in the eighth.

Jimmie Lyons doubled with one out and came home on a triple by Frank Warfield.

The next run was unearned as Warfield scored when Dihigo had a two-base error that allowed Pete Hill to reach.

In his eight innings, Gatewood (0-1) surrendered eight hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.
