Negro League Tournament: 33 American Giants at 42 Monarchs

Editor’s note: The games in the Negro Leagues Diamond Gems Tournament are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. The designated hitter will not be used for any games. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur.

The 1942 Kansas City Monarchs scored four unanswered runs on the way to a 4-2 victory over the 1933 Indianapolis American Giants in the opening round of the Negro Leagues Diamond Gems B Tournament.

The American Giants scored twice in the second inning against Monarchs starter Satchel Paige.

Alex Radcliff doubled and scored on another double by Jack Marshall. Starting pitcher Bill Foster‘s sacrifice fly made it 2-0.

Paige (1-0) was able to hold Indianapolis scoreless the rest of the way as he allowed six hits with a walk and nine strikeouts.

Kansas City took the lead in the bottom of the second with runs. Bill Williams had a two-runs triple before he scored on a sacrifice fly by Joe Greene.

The last run for the Monarchs came in the fifth on a sacrifice by Willard Brown.

Foster (0-1) tossed eight innings as he gave up 11 hits with a walk and eight strikeouts.
