Editor’s note: The 1964 Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.
Errors were a big part of the outcome as the Los Angeles Angels posted a 4-2 victory over the Cleveland Indians in the second round of the 1964 Tournament.
With the win, the Angels are headed to New York for a quarterfinal contest against the Yankees.
All four of the runs by the Angels were scored after an error with two outs, while the Indians picked up an unearned tally off Los Angeles starter Dean Chance.
In the bottom of the second inning, Buck Rodgers reached on a miscue that put two runners on base before Bobby Knoop smashed a three-run homer off Cleveland starter Sam McDowell.
The Angels added to their advantage in the fifth after Willie Smith reached on a error to load the bases. McDowell walked Jim Fregosi and Los Angeles led 4-0.
Leon Wagner‘s solo homer in the sixth off Chance was the only run of the affair that didn’t involve an error.
Cleveland’s other run came in the eighth after Dick Howser got on base on an error by Fregosi. Wagner’s RBI single brought home Howser and the Indians trailed by two.
Chance (1-0) went the distance for the Angels allowing five hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
McDowell (0-1) may have deserved a better fate as he held the Angels to three hits in seven innings with three walks and nine strikeouts. Don McMahon tossed a scoreless eighth for Cleveland giving up a hit, while fanning two.
