Whitey Ford tossed a three-hitter for the New York Yankees in a 6-0 victory over the Minnesota Twins in the 1964 Tournament.

With the win, the Yankees are set to entertain the winner of the Cleveland Indians at Los Angeles Angels contest in the quarterfinal round.

Ford (1-0) held the Twins hitless until Tony Oliva‘s two-out single in the top of the fourth. The other hits by the Twins were a single by Earl Battey fifth and a double by Zoilo Versalles in the sixth. The New York lefty walked four and fanned five.

Offensively, the Yankees had some help in scoring their first run off Twins starter Jim Kaat as Joe Pepitone singled in the single before Elston Howard reached on a three-base error by Minnesota left fielder Harmon Killebrew.

Mickey Mantle added a RBI single in the third that was followed by a sacrifice fly from Tom Tresh and New York led 3-0.

Kaat (0-1) went seven innings allowing nine hits with a walk and five strikeouts before Al Worthington took over the mound.

Worthington struggled in the eighth. He walked Tresh and Howard was on base again thanks to an error before Clete Boyer smashed a three-run homer for the final margin.
