The Cincinnati Reds needed an extra inning to advance to the quarterfinals of the 1964 Tournament.
A walk-off single by Tommy Harper in the bottom of the 10th gave the Reds a 4-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants.
Steve Boros coaxed a walk from Giants pitcher Bob Shaw to begin the 10th for the Reds. Pinch-hitter Chico Ruiz doubled to excite the faithful fans in Crosley Field.
With the infield playing in, Pete Rose smacked a grounder to San Francisco first baseman Orlando Cepeda who fired home to cut down Boros at the plate as Ruiz advanced to third.
Harper’s game-winner scored Ruiz as the Reds punched their ticket to the next round in Philadelphia against the Phillies.
Giants Score First
Jose Pagan gave the Giants an early advantage in the second inning with a sacrifice fly off Reds starter Jim O’Toole.
Cincinnati answered in the third as Vada Pinson drilled a three-run homer off Giants starter Juan Marichal.
San Francisco tied the affair with a pair of runs in the sixth as Hal Lanier and Willie Mays singled to begin the rally.
Cepeda’s RBI single got the Giants within a run before Jim Ray Hart‘s sacrifice fly tied it at 3-3.
O’Toole (1-0) worked all 10 innings for the Reds as he gave up seven hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
Marichal tossed eight innings for the Giants allowing five hits with a pair of walks with six strikeouts.
After a scoreless ninth. Shaw (0-1) was tagged with loss as he got just one out in the bottom of the 10th.
