Legends of the AFL: Week 9

Editor’s Note: The games for the Legends of the American Football League simulation are played on computer with Action! PC Football. The contests are played with the “coaching” by a human as well as computer simulation. One season per franchise was selected for league play with the 10 teams that merged with the National Football League competing for the championship. Stories from the action will appear on Press Room Pass each Sunday until the completion of the 14-week regular season and playoffs.

Boston’s chances for victory appeared to be bleak, but there’s always hope.

The Patriots learned that lesson with a come-from-behind 14-12 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

As a result of the win, the Patriots (6-3) are now tied with the Houston Oilers (6-3) for second place in the East Division behind the New York Jets (7-2).

After Jan Stenerud‘s 41-yard field goal gave the Chiefs a 12-0 advantage with 6:07 remaining, the Patriots found some offense with an 8-play, 69-yard drive that was capped by a 19-yard scoring strike from Babe Parilli to Gino Cappaletti.

With Kansas City’s lead cut to 12-7, the Cappelletti’s on-side kick was recovered by teammate Mike Dukes and Boston had its opportunity.

However, the Patriots were not able to sustain a drive and turned the ball over to Kansas City with 2:06 left in the game.

Unfortunately for Kansas City, the Chiefs couldn’t gain a yard as Boston used its timeouts to slow the clock down.

Jerrell Wilson’s punt for Kansas City went out of bounds at the 26-yard line and the Patriots had just 1:36 to get the job done.

Parilli went to work as he led the Patriots to the 4-yard line in six plays with 47 seconds to go.

The next play, Parilli’s pass was incomplete and the Patriots were also called for holding.

Now at the 14, Kansas City’s Bobby Bell was able to work through Boston’s line to sack Parilli at the 20-yard line.

Boston rallied the troops quickly and Parilli was able complete a 15-yard pass to Cappelletti with 29 second on the clock.

Facing a 4th-and-five, Parilli found Art Graham in the end zone and the Patriots celebrated the moment of victory.

Kansas City had one last gasp, but Mike Livingston threw a pair of desparation passes that fell incomplete.

Livingston had taken over for Len Dawson, who suffered a knee injury late in the second period when the Chiefs were up 6-0.

Stenerud had kicked field goals of 27 and 20 yards by that point. Livingston led Kansas City on a drive late in first half that led to a 26-yard field goal and a 9-0 lead at the intermission.
