1994 Post-Season: Expos at Braves G2

Editor’s note: The 1994 playoff games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. The designated hitter will be used for the American League contests as well as when those teams are at home during the World Series. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.

Some late power and a two-hitter by Tom Glavine allowed the Atlanta Braves to even their best-of-five National League Division Series at a game apiece with a 5-1 win over the Montreal Expos.

Although Glavine (1-0) had some trouble at times with six walks, a single in the first by Moises Alou and a RBI double in the fifth by Marquis Grissom was all of the offense the Expos could muster against the lefty.

The Braves scored in the second off Montreal starter Pedro Martinez as Mark Lemke smacked a RBI single.

With the game tied at 1-1 entering the bottom of the eighth, Atlanta’s offense came to life.

Roberto Kelly began the rally with one out as he doubled off Martinez.

After Jeff Blauser was retired on a fly ball for the second out of the frame, Ryan Klesko drilled a two-run homer and Martinez was done.

Montreal manager Felipe Alou called lefty Denis Boucher to the mound to face Fred McGriff.

After McGriff singled, David Justice hammered a two-run shot that gave the Braves their final advantage. Mel Rojas got the final out of the eighth.

Martinez (0-1) tossed 7⅔ innings allowing three runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts.

Glavine faced five batters in the top of the ninth as he went for a complete game. He struck out Larry Walker for the fourth time before walking Darrin Fletcher and Wil Cordero.

At that point, Glavine fanned Mike Lansing and Sean Berry to finish contest with 13 strikeouts.

The series moves to Montreal for game three with Jeff Fassero (0-0) getting the start for the Expos as the Braves counter with another lefty in Steve Avery (0-0).
