Legends of the AFL: Week 12

Editor’s Note: The games for the Legends of the American Football League simulation are played on computer with Action! PC Football. The contests are played with the “coaching” by a human as well as computer simulation. One season per franchise was selected for league play with the 10 teams that merged with the National Football League competing for the championship. Stories from the action will appear on Press Room Pass each Sunday until the completion of the 14-week regular season and playoffs.

The New York Jets are in the playoffs.

With a 23-13 victory over the Houston Oilers, the Jets (8-4) clinched a spot in the post-season. Despite the loss, the Oilers (8-4) are also in the tournament.

Both teams have one more game remaining in the regular season along with a bye week. If both teams win their finale, the top seed from the East Division will be determined by a tiebreaker.

New York led through out the contest in Houston after Jim Turner‘s field goal early in the opening period.

At the start of the second quarter, Joe Namath tossed a 13-yard touchdown pass to Pete Lammons as the Jets led 10-0.

George Blanda had two field goals of 24 and 26 yards before halftime to cut New York’s lead to 10-6 by the intermission.

Turner added another boot from 30 yards for the only score in the third stanza.

In the final period, the Jets put together a 19-play, 86-yard drive that ended with what turned about to by the winning score. Matt Snell capped the drive with a 1-yard plunge that put the Jets on top 20-6.

Later in the fourth, Blanda hit John Carson with a 20-yard scoring pass and it was 20-13 with 5:32 left.

The Jets put the game away with a 13-play drive that lasted five minutes, which ended with a 34-yard field goal by Turner.
