27 * 61 Replay 143: 05 White Sox at 27 Yankees

Scott Podsednik raced home with what turned out to be the game winning run in the top of the ninth as the 2005 Chicago White Sox outlasted the 1927 New York Yankees 7-6.

Podsednik led off the ninth with a single of Wilcy Moore, who was between starts for the Yankees.

After Tadahito Iguchi struck out, Jermaine Dye singled and Podsednik moved to third.

With Paul Konerko at the plate, Moore had a pitch get by catcher Pat Collins allowing Podsednik to score on the passed ball.

Dustin Hermanson closed the affair out in the bottom of the ninth. With one out, Lou Gehrig doubled to add some pressure on Hermanson, who was charged with a blown save in the eighth.

Hermanson retired Tony Lazzeri on a ground ball and fanned Bob Meusel to pick up the win.

The White Sox built a 6-0 advantage early in the contest against Dutch Ruether, who allowed just two hits from the third to the eighth.

A RBI single by Konerko in the first made it 1-0 before Chicago added five runs in the second.

Podsednik knocked home two runs with a single to begin the scoring. The third tally came when Dye reached on an error before Joe Crede and Aaron Rowand capped the outburst with run-scoring singles.

The Yankees began the road back when they scored a run in the fifth on a single by Collins.

A RBI triple by Earle Combs in the seventh closed the gap to 6-2 in the seventh.

Chicago starter Jose Contreras got into trouble in the eighth and would retire just one batter as the Yankees would go one to score four times to tie the contest at 6-6.

The began the rally with three straight singles by Babe Ruth, Gehrig and Lazzeri produced the first score.

Meusel had a sacrifice fly before Joe Dugan ended the day for Contreras with a single.

Hermanson was called from the bullpen and walked Collins to load the bases. With the infield plaing in, pinch-hitter Ben Paschal hit into a fielder’s choice that cut down a run at the plate.

Combs came though for New York with a two-run single to set up the unfortunate circumstances for the Yankees in the ninth.

New York’s Myles Thomas (9-6) gets a rare start for the Yankees in the third contest of the five-game series as Orlando Hernandez gets the ball for the White Sox.
