27 * 61 Replay 142: 05 White Sox at 61 Yankees

Ralph Terry tossed a three-hitter to lead the 1961 New York Yankees to a 4-1 victory over the 2005 Chicago White Sox.

Terry (10-11), who fanned five with a walk, retired the first 14 batters before Joe Crede singled for Chicago’s first hit in the top of the fifth.

The other two hits off Terry were in the sixth as Juan Uribe hit a solo homer and Scott Podsednik later singled.

New York touched up Chicago starter Jon Garland in the second and the third.

A triple by Elston Howard scored Mickey Mantle, who led off the second with a single. Howard came home on a single by Yogi Berra and it was 2-0.

Roger Maris drove in the other two runs in the third with a single to make it 4-0.

Garland went seven innings for the White Sox allowing 11 hits with three by Howard. He also had three strikeouts and a pair of walks. Cliff Politte worked a scoreless eighth.

In the second matchup of the five-game series, Jim Coates (6-6) starts for the Yankees, while the White Sox counter with Jose Contreas.
