Editor’s note: The 1964 Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.
Denis Menke had four hits and drove in two runs to lead the Milwaukee Braves to a 5-2 victory over the Philadelphia Philles in the semifinals in the 1964 Tournament.
With the win, the Braves will face the winner of the Detroit Tigers at New York Yankees affair in the championship game.
Menke broke a tie in the top of the eighth with a RBI double off Dennis Bennett to give the Braves a 2-1 advantage. Frank Bolling‘s sacrifice fly added another run to the margin.
In the ninth, Menke and Bolling had back-to-back RBI singles off Jack Baldschun for the final runs for the Braves.
Hank Fischer (1-0) went the distance on the mound for Milwaukee allowing 10 hits with eight strikeouts.
Bennett (0-1) left after eight frames as he surrendered three runs on 10 hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Baldschun gave up two runs on four hits with a walk and a pair of strikeouts in his one inning.
Phils Score First
Wes Covington put the Phillies in front in the second inning with a solo homer.
However, the lead didn’s last long as Hank Aaron drilled a run-scoring single in the third to tie it at 1-1.
Philadelphia’s last run of the contest was in the bottom of the ninth as Dick Allen singled to score Johnny Callison, who had doubled.
Clay Dalrymple ended the rally by grounding into a double play that gave the Braves the win.
