Bobo Newsom tossed a four-hitter as the St. Louis Browns exploded offensively on the way to a 10-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the opening round of the 1938 Tournament.

With the victory, the Browns are slated to play their hometown rival St. Louis Cardinals in the second round.

Newsom (1-0) gave up two singles to Lloyd Waner and Gus Suhr in the first inning before allowing another single in the fifth to Lee Handley.

Suhr doubled in the eighth for Pittsburgh’s final hit.

The Browns scored three times in the second inning off Pittsburgh starter Jim Tobin to grab an early advantage as Newsom drove a run with a double, while Mel Almada added a two-run double.

Billy Sullivan had solo homer in the fourth before Beau Bell drilled a two-run blast in the fifth to make it 6-0.

Tobin (0-1) worked five innings giving up six runs on eight hits with a walk and a pair of strikeouts.

Bill Swift tossed two scoreless frames for the Pirates, while St. Louis rocked Mace Brown with four runs in his second inning on the mound in the ninth. Ed Brandt got the final out of the game for the Pirates.

Newson scored on a wild pitch from Brown, while Bell, Red Kress and Don Heffner each had a RBI single for St. Louis.
