1938 Tournament: A’s at Cubs

Editor’s note: Tournament games are played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Three-man pitching rotations will be used for starting pitchers. Injuries are in-game only during this single elimination event.

Billy Werber had three hits including a two-run homer as the Philadelphia A’s defeated the Chicago Cubs 3-0 in the opening round of the 1938 Tournament.

Werber’s blast came in the first inning against Cubs starter Bill Lee as the A’s led 2-0.

The A’s added their final tally in the third as a double by Werber moved Lou Finney to third. Finney scored on a sacrifice fly by Frankie Hayes.

George Caster (1-0) tossed a complete game for Philadelphia holding the Cubs to just five hits with three strikeouts, but getting into trouble by walking six. The Cubs stranded eight base runners and also hit into three double plays.

Lee (0-1) also went the distance for Chicago as he surrendered seven hits with a pair of walks and three strikeouts.

With the win, the A’s advance to the second round as they are set to visit the winner of the Boston Bees at Detroit Tigers affair.
