LIBERTY, Ind. –
The Union County boys basketball program may be going through a coaching transition, but the process is been smooth as the Patriots prepare for the season.

“We’ve had a good start to the year,” Union County Head Coach Jesse Moses said. “Guys have been working their tails off and pushing each other to get better.”

“For me, it’s mainly the behind the scenes stuff,” Moses added. “The daily things, odds and ends. As for the practices, I’ve loved it. (Former Head) Coach (Mark) Detweiler always trusted in his coaching staff and gave us a voice, so practice for me hasn’t been much different. We continue to teach and develop like we always have.”

“For the players, they have just continued to grind and work,” Moses continued. “Their goals, their dreams and their approach haven’t changed. We have great group of young men. They push each other to excel and demand that constant focus from their teammates.”

There are seven seniors on the roster including All-Tri-Eastern Conference performer Mason Miller.

“We have a lot of guys who can do a lot of things,” Moses said. “Day in, day out guys know they have to compete. Having some experienced players has allowed us to push forward with some things and it has been a real benefit for the younger guys to see how they need to approach every day.”

Miller averaged 9.6 points to go with 5.0 rebounds each contest. Classmate Cameron Donovan scored 8.2 points and grabbed a team-high 6.0 rebounds per game.

The other seniors are Preston Scott, Joey Weller, Trevor Reiboldt, Derek Dearth and Luke Haas. Cameron Sanford, Ryan Hensley, Mook Shepler and Blake Fields are juniors.

“We have experienced depth and we are versatile,” Moses said. “Our guys know we have a lot of weapons and our guys don’t care who gets the glory. It’s a good recipe.”

Union County opens the season on Wednesday against Connersville at the Spartan Bowl.

The Patriots begin their TEC slate at home with Knightstown on Friday, Dec. 1.
