Reds Decade Tournament: 1911 at 1977

Editor’s note: The Reds Decade Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation that starts over with each best-of-three game series. If a real life starter is not in the rotation, he can be used in relief. Cincinnati squads that did not made the post-season are featured in this event as one team from each decade from the 1910s to the 1980s were selected.

Home run power was the difference as the 1977 Cincinnati Reds defeated the 1911 Cincinnati Reds 6-0 to reach the championship series of the Reds Decade Tournament.

With the victory, the 1977 squad takes the second round best of three series 2-1 and faces either the 1924 Reds or 1948 Reds in the finals.

Dan Driessen hit the first of four long balls by the 1977 team off starter Harry Gaspar in the second inning to drive in a pair of runs.

Pete Rose had a solo shot in in the third to give his team a 3-0 advantage.

George Foster added to the final margin with a two-run blast in the fourth and a solo homer in the sixth.

On the mound, Jack Billingham (1-0) went the distance limiting the 1911 squad to four hits with six walks and two strikeouts.

Gaspar (0-1) gave up five runs on three of the homers in four innings, while walking three.
