Legends of the AFL: Week 11

Editor’s Note: The games for the Legends of the American Football League simulation are played on computer with Action! PC Football. The contests are played with the “coaching” by a human as well as computer simulation. One season per franchise was selected for league play with the 10 teams that merged with the National Football League competing for the championship. Stories from the action will appear on Press Room Pass each Sunday until the completion of the 14-week regular season and playoffs.

Pete Gogolak kicked a pair of field goals in the final moments as the Buffalo Bills beat the New York Jets 20-17.

Special teams and defense proved to be the difference for the Bills, who could not produce an offensive touchdown.

Gogolak tied the contest with a 46-yard boot with 1:41 remaining.

With game tied at 17-17, the Bills chose to kick deep and Bake Turner caught it at the one and returned it to the 20-yard line.

Buffalo stopped two running plays and called a timeout as the Jets faced a third and seven.

Jets quarterback Joe Namath was hit as he threw a pass to Don Maynard and it was picked off by Bills defensive back George Saimes and he returned it to the New York 30-yard line with 58 seconds left in the contest.

Neither team had a timeout as the Bills looked for the game-winning score.

After an incomplete pass by Jack Kemp, the Bills signal caller found Bass at the two-yard line with 42 seconds left. Kemp handed off to Cookie Gilchrist, who was stopped short of the goalline.

With the clock winding down, the field goal unit set up and Gogolak’s kick from 20 yards was good with 14 seconds to go.

After the kickoff, Namath went for broke downfield and the game ended as his pass was intercepted by Harry Jacobs as time expired.

New York was about to take a 14-point lead early in the second quarter when the Bills defense tied the game. The Jets were eight yards from paydirt when Mike Stratton drilled Matt Snell forcing a fumble that rookie defensive back Oliver Dobbins picked up and raced 96 yards for a score.

Hagood Clarke scored Buffalo’s other touchdown early in the final period on a 77-yard punt return.

For the Jets, Namath connected with Maynard twice for scores. The duo hooked from 13-yards in the first period and then for 9-yards in the third. Jim Turner accounted for the other points with a field goal in the second quarter as the Jets led 10-7 at halftime.
