Legends of the AFL Preview

The American Football League began play in 1960 and celebrated its 10th season during 1969 in preparation for becoming part of the National Football League a year later.

Among the 10 teams selected to participate in the Legends of the AFL won two Super Bowl titles. The 1968 New York Jets and 1969 Kansas City Chiefs claimed what was then known as the AFL-NFL World Championship Game. The 1967 Oakland Raiders won the AFL crown, but fell in the second AFL-NFL affair.

In addition to those three squads, there were three others that won AFL championships prior to the 1966 season. The 1960 Houston Oilers, 1963 San Diego Chargers and 1964 Buffalo Bills all won title contests.

The remaining four teams scheduled to take part are the 1962 Denver Broncos, 1964 Boston Patriots, 1969 Cincinnati Bengals and 1968 Miami Dolphins.

Editor’s Note: The games for the Legends of the American Football League simulation are played on computer with Action! PC Football. The contests are played with the “coaching” by a human as well as computer simulation. One season per franchise was selected for league play with the 10 teams that merged with the National Football League competing for the championship. Stories from the action will appear on Press Room Pass each Sunday until the completion of the 14-week regular season and playoffs.
