A two-run homer by Manny Ramirez in the sixth inning made the difference as the 2004 Boston Red Sox came back to beat the 1961 New York Yankees 4-2.

The Red Sox trailed by a run heading into the top of the sixth when Johnny Damon led off with a double against New York starter Rollie Sheldon.

Orlando Cabrera singled to tie it at 2-2. Ramirez followed with his blast that produced what turned out to be final runs of the contest.

The Yankees grabbed a 2-0 advantage in the fourth inning against Red Sox starter Derek Lowe.

Elston Howard singled and Yogi Berra smashed his 11th homer of the season to put New York in front.

Boston answered to cut the its deficit in half in the fifth as Jason Varitek drilled a solo shot that set the stage for the winning Red Sox rally one frame later.

Lowe went the distance for Boston giving up eight hits with a walk and five strikeouts.

Sheldon (3-7) worked seven innings allowing just six hits as he fanned seven. Jim Coates worked the final two innings and struck out one.

Bud Daley (5-5) will take the mound for New York in the second affair of the four-game series in Yankee Stadium, while Boston counters Bronson Arroyo.
