Herb Pennock went the distance on the mound for the 1927 New York Yankees on the way to a 4-2 victory over the 1968 Detroit Tigers.

Pennock (10-12) didn’t allow an earned run in the affair as he gave up eight hits and walked two with two strikeouts.

The Tigers scored in the first as Dick McAuliffe reached second on a error by New York shortstop Mark Koenig and Mickey Stanley banged out a RBI single.

The Yankees answered with three runs in the second off Detroit starter Earl Wilson thanks to some help and a long ball.

Tony Lazzeri drilled a ball toward Detroit center fielder Jim Northrup and the miscue had a baserunner on second.

Bob Muesel tied the contest with a single before Pat Collins hammered a two-run homer, which was his 10th of the year.

Babe Ruth blasted a solo shot in the third inning for his 58th home run of the season as the Yankees led 4-1.

An error by Lou Gehrig led to Detroit’s final run in the ninth. Norm Cash was able to reach second after the fielding mistake by Gehrig and then score on a single by Northrup, but that was all the Tigers could muster against Pennock.

Wilson went eight innings for the Tigers giving up four hits with eight strikeouts.

Urban Shocker (18-4) gets the ball from New York manager Ralph Houk in the third contest of the four-game series as Detroit manager Mayo Smith picked Mickey Lolich to start for the Tigers.
