1994 World Series: Reds at White Sox G7

Editor’s note: The 1994 playoff games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. The designated hitter will be used for the American League contests as well as when those teams are at home during the World Series. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.

The fans in Comiskey Park were hoping for a walk-off win by the Chicago White Sox in the seventh game of the 1994 World Series.

It didn’t happen as the Cincinnati Reds held on for a 3-1 victory to win the finale to claim the championship.

With the White Sox trailing by two runs in their last chance for a rally with one out in the bottom of the ninth, Frank Thomas coaxed a walk from Reds starter Tom Browning.

Julio Franco singled to put runners at first and second as Robin Ventura stepped to the plate. Reds manager Davey Johnson pulled a tired Browning in favor of lefty Chuck McElroy.

Ventura hit a grounder to Bret Boone that would have ended the game, but the Reds second baseman booted it and the bases were loaded with just one down.

Darrin Jackson was next up for Chicago and Johnson was already back at the mound calling for Reds closer Jeff Brantley.

The end result deflated the Comiskey faithful as Jackson’s grounder to Reds shortstop Barry Larkin became a double play that had Cincinnati celebrating its title.

Browning (4-0) allowed five hits with two walks and a strikeout to earn the win as Brantley picked up his fifth save.

The game didn’t start off very well for Browning as he was greeted by a leadoff homer by Tim Raines in the first inning, but that proved to be the only run the Reds left would surrender.

Chicago starter Jack McDowell (1-4) blanked the Reds until the seventh inning as he would leave the mound with one out after giving up two runs on six hits with four strikeouts.

Boone began the seventh with a double and one out later, he would score on another double by Jacob Brumfield that tied at at 1-1.

Brumfield scored the go-ahead run on a double by Reggie Sanders. A sacrifice by Joe Oliver in the ninth off Dennis Cook added an insurance run for the Reds in the top of the ninth.
