The Philadelphia Phillies took a commanding lead in the 1980 championship series with a sweep of the Baltimore Orioles in Memorial Stadium.

With a 9-2 victory in game two, the Phillies followed an 8-1 win in the opener and now hold a 2-0 advantage in the best of seven affair.

Philadelphia rookie pitcher Marty Bystrom (1-0) didn’t allow a run until the sixth inning, but by that time the Phillies had built a lead.

Manny Trillo had a two-run single in the third off Baltimore starter Scott McGregor (0-1), while Bob Boone added a sacrifice fly that made it 3-0.

Pete Rose led off the fourth with a solo homer and the Phillies were up by four runs.

Ken Singleton had a solo shot off Bystrom in the sixth, but the Phillies answered in the top of the seventh.

Boone reached on a two-base error by Orioles shortstop Mark Belanger and then scored as Larry Bowa‘s single was misplayed by Garry Maddox in center field.

Al Bumbry‘s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh produced Baltimore’s final tally against Bystrom, who went the distance giving up seven hits with eight strikeouts.

The Philles sent nine batters to the plate in the eighth to put the game away as the Phillies scored three times off McGregor, Sammy Stewart and Tippy Martinez with RBI singles. Lonnie Smith tagged McGregor, Boone got Stewart and Bowa ended the scoring against Martinez.

Philadelphia final tally came in the ninth off Martinez as Bowa added another run-scoring single.

The Phillies send Dick Ruthven to the mound in game three at Veterans Stadium, while Baltimore looks to Jim Palmer as the Orioles try for their first win in the series.
