1977 Tournament: Pirates at Red Sox

Editor’s note: Tournament games are played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. The designated hitter is also being used for all games.

Pittsburgh’s Dave Parker had three hits with a pair of homers as he led the Pirates to the 1977 Tournament championship.

Each squad hit three long balls as the Pirates beat the Boston Red Sox 10-3 at Fenway Park.

Parker got things underway in the top of the first with a solo homer off Boston starter Fergie Jenkins.

In the third, the Pirates sent Jenkins to the showers as they grabbed a 4-0 advantage.

Rennie Stennett and Parker had RBI singles before Willie Stargell ended the day for Jenkins with a run-scoring double.

With the lead, Pittsburgh starter Jim Rooker was able to survive the bottom of the third as Denny Doyle, Carl Yastrzemski and Jim Rice each hit solo homers for the Red Sox to close the gap to 4-3.

Rooker would end up going the distance for the Pirates with seven strikeouts as he gave up seven hits for the contest, but just two over the last six frames.

In contrast, the Pirates added six runs off four Boston pitchers the rest of the way.

Frank Taveras picked up a run-scoring single in the fifth and then knocked two more in the sixth with another single.

Phil Garner had a solo homer to begin the eighth, while Parker put an exclamation point on the victory with a two-run blast later in the inning.
