1951 Tournament: Cardinals at Indians

Editor’s note: Tournament games are played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Three-man pitching rotations will be used for starting pitchers. Injuries are in-game only during this single elimination event.

Early Wynn had some control issues, but he managed to get the job done with a little help as the Cleveland Indians posted a 5-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the second round of the 1951 Tournament.

With the victory, the Indians will entertain the Philadelphia Phillies in the semifinal round.

Hoping for a complete game, Wynn walked Del Rice to begin the ninth and then allowed a single to pinch-hitter Harry Walker prompting Cleveland manager Al Lopez to call Lou Brissie from the bullpen.

Although St. Louis picked up a run when Red Schoendienst hit into a fielder’s choice, Brissie was able to close out the game to earn his second save of the tournament.

Wynn (1-0) gave up nine hits with seven walks and six strikeouts as he picked up the win.

Hal Lanier (0-1) worked six innings for the Cardinals as he surrendered nine hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

The Indians got on the scoreboard in the first inning on a two-run single by Luke Easter.

Cleveland was able to build a 5-0 advantage with three runs in the third.

The first run came with the bases loaded as Easter reached on an error. Al Rosen and Ray Boone later hit sacrifice flies to bring home the other runs.

Schoendienst knocked in the first run for the Cardinals with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
