1940s DG Tournament: 1946 Cardinals at 1941 Dodgers

Editor’s note: The 1940s Diamond Gems Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.

Whit Wyatt tossed a complete game shutout as he led the 1941 Brooklyn Dodgers to a 2-0 victory over the 1946 St. Louis Cardinals in the first round of the 1940s Diamond Gems Tournament.

Wyatt did not walk a batter as he surrendered five hits with five strikeouts to get the win.

Howie Pollett matched Wyatt on the mound with zeros until the bottom of the eighth inning when the Dodgers produced the decisive runs.

With two outs, Joe Medwick‘s two-run single that scored Pee Wee Reese and Pete Reiser proved to be the difference. Reiser led the Dodgers with four hits, including a pair of doubles.

Pollett retired Cookie Lavagetto for the final out, but the damage was done. Pollett gave up 10 hits on the day with two walks and three strikeouts.
