Monty Stratton tossed a one-hiter as the Chicago White Sox beat the New York Giants 6-0 in the opening round of the 1938 Tournament.

Stratton gave up a lead-off single to Jo-Jo Moore and that would be it for the Giants. Stratton (1-0) walked two and hit a batter, while not striking out any hitters.

A two-run homer by Marv Owen got the White Sox on the scoreboard in the top of the first against New York starter Carl Hubbell.

Chicago added three more runs in the top of the sixth to take a 5-0 lead.

Rip Radcliff doubled to begin the rally as Luke Appling singled to drive in the first tally. After Luke Sewell singled to make it 2-0, Hubbell’s day came to an end.

Hal Schumacher replaced Hubbell and surrendered a sacrifice fly to Stratton.

The final run for the White Sox came in the ninth on Radcliff’s sacrifice fly off Jumbo Brown.

Hubbell (0-1) was tagged with the loss as he gave up five runs pm nine hits with two walks and a strikeout.

Schumaker, Brown and Bill Lohrman finished on the mound for the Giants.

The Giants will face the winner of the Brooklyn Dodgers at Boston Red Sox contest in the second round.
