100-Loss Tournament Preview

Editor’s note: The 100-Loss Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.

Futility can be an interesting topic when it comes to baseball. There is a long history of bad teams with the most famous being the 1962 New York Mets.

This tournament has the potential to have a lot of thing go wrong, but one of the teams will find its way to the championship.

All but one of the 16 teams in this event had 100 losses during a season with only one squad representing an organization. The 1981 San Diego Padres had a 41-69 record with a .373 winning percentage, which would have put them over the 100-loss mark had the season been completed without the player’s strike that summer.

This tournament is not seeded and the teams were paired randomly by era.

Which team would be the favorite?

Will it be the 1962 Mets? How about one of the new members of the club, the 2022 Cincinnati Reds?
