100-Loss Tournament: 2006 Devil Rays at 1948 White Sox

Editor’s note: The 100-Loss Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.

A rally in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the 1948 Chicago White Sox a 7-3 victory over the 2006 Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the second round of the 100-Loss Tournament.

With the score tied 3-3, Devil Rays starter James Shields gave up a single to Aaron Robinson just before Don Kolloway sent him to the showers with a two-run homer that put the White Sox on top 5-3.

Chicago added two more runs before the frame ended. Taffy Wright had a RBI single off Dan Miceli and the final tally came on a sacrifice fly by Tony Luepin off Tyler Walker.

Joe Haynes tossed a complete game for the White Sox to earn the victory as he gave up eight hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

Shields was tagged with the loss as he surrendered 11 hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Miceli didn’t retire a batter as gave up two hits and walked one. Walker got all three out to end the eighth.

The White Sox grabbed a 2-0 advantage in the third on a run-scoring single by Pat Seery and a RBI double by Cass Michaels.

Tampa Bay tied the affair in the fifth on Aubrey Huff‘s RBI double and a ground out by Delmon Young.

Michaels put Chicago back in front 3-2 with a RBI single in the bottom of the fifth.

The Devil Rays tied the contest again in the top of the eighth on Greg Norton‘s sacrifice fly.
