An early offensive outburst gave the 1969 Montreal Expos the advantage on the way to a 4-2 victory over the 2006 Kansas City Royals in the opening round of the 100-Loss Tournament.

Montreal sent eight batters to the plate in the top of the first inning against Kansas City starter Mark Redman as the Expos scored three times. Coco Laboy drove in a pair of runs with a single before he scored the final tally of the frame on a double by Ron Fairly.

A solo homer by John Buck in the second off Montreal starter Bill Stoneman gave the Royals their first run of the affair. Emil Brown got the Royals to within a run with a RBI single in the fourth.

Ron Brand provided the final tally for the Expos in the sixth with run-scoring single as Redman was sent to the showers after giving up four runs on six hits with six walks.

Todd Wellemeyer finished up on the mound for Kansas City, but the Royals couldn’t muster any offense the rest of the way against Stoneman. Wellemeyer allowed a hit and fanned two.

Stoneman surrendered nine hits in his complete game effort with five walks and five strikeouts.
