100-Loss Tournament: 1955 Senators at 1977 Blue Jays

Editor’s note: The 100-Loss Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.

Carlos Paula had five hits including a homer and a pair triples as he led the 1955 Washington Senators to a 7-4 victory over the 1977 Toronto Blue Jays in the second round of the 100-Loss Tournament.

In the top of the first against Toronto starter Jerry Garvin, Paula drove in two runs with a triple and later scored on a single by Clint Courtney. Paula blasted a solo shot in the third off Garvin as the Senators led 4-0.

Toronto got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third against Washington starter Mickey McDermott on Ron Fairly‘s sacrifice fly.

The Senators ousted Garvin in the fourth when Mickey Vernon smashed a three-run homer to make it 7-1.
Pete Vuckovich took over on the mound for Toronto and blanked Washington the rest of the way on four hits with eight strikeouts. Garvin allowed eight hits with a pair of walks as he was tagged with the loss.

Otto Velez had a two-run homer in the fifth for the Blue Jays, who picked up their final tally in the on a sacrifice fly by Steve Staggs.

McDermott went eight innings for the Senators to get the win surrendering nine hits with six walks and five strikeouts. Pedro Ramos got the last three outs to send Washington to the semifinals.
