Legends of the AFL: Week 2

Editor’s Note: The games for the Legends of the American Football League simulation are played on computer with Action! PC Football. The contests are played with the “coaching” by a human as well as computer simulation. One season per franchise was selected for league play with the 10 teams that merged with the National Football League competing for the championship. Stories from the action will appear on Press Room Pass each Sunday until the completion of the 14-week regular season and playoffs.

Paul Lowe ran for two scores and threw for another as the San Diego Chargers remained unbeaten with a 28-24 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Now leading the West Division with a 2-0 mark, the Chargers never trailed as they were able to maintain their distance from Kansas City after taking the lead for good in the second period.

Lowe hooked up with Dave Kocourek for a 31-yard score on a halfback pass with 3:04 left in the opening stanza.

After Mike Garrett had a 17-yard run to tie the affair at 7-7 early in the second quarter, the Chargers found the end zone twice to build a 21-10 advantage by the intermission.

San Diego got a 1-yard plunge from Lowe before the Chargers ended the half with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Tobin Rote to Lance Alworth.

Jan Stenerud kicked a 45-yard field goal with eight seconds remaining in the first half to cut the Kansas City deficit to 11 points.

Robert Holmes scored on a 1-yard run that capped an eight-play, 69-yard drive that made it 21-17.

On San Diego’s next possession, the Chargers answered quickly as Keith Lincoln ran 84 yards just short of the goalline.

Lowe ran for two yards and then three more for a touchdown as the Chargers expanded their margin to 28-17 with 5:03 left in the third.

Len Dawson threw a 6-yard scoring pass to Fred Arbanas late in the game, but that would be all the Chiefs could put together teh rest of the way.
