Legends of the AFL: Week 8

Editor’s Note: The games for the Legends of the American Football League simulation are played on computer with Action! PC Football. The contests are played with the “coaching” by a human as well as computer simulation. One season per franchise was selected for league play with the 10 teams that merged with the National Football League competing for the championship. Stories from the action will appear on Press Room Pass each Sunday until the completion of the 14-week regular season and playoffs.

George Blanda threw a pair of touchdown passes in the second half to lead the Houston Oilers to a 17-10 victory over the Buffalo Bills.

The day began with four teams tied for first in the American Football League’s East Division.

Houston and New York remain deadlocked for the top spot at 6-2 as the Jets beat Boston 41-21. The Bills and Patriots fall together into a tie for third place at 5-3.

Trailing 7-3 at halftime, Blanda led an 11-play, 64-yard drive in the third period that put the Oilers in front 10-7 with 2:59 to go.

Blanda capped the drive with a 10-yard pass to Bill Groman and then he booted the extra point.

In the final stanza, Blanda hooked up with John Carson on a 57-yard scoring strike to make it 17-7 with 8:47 left to play.

Buffalo responded the next time the Bills had the ball to close their deficit to seven points with a 35-yard field goal by Pete Gogolak at 6:11.

However from that point, the Oilers were able to hold off the Bills on their next two possessions for the win.
