Legends of the AFL: Week 6

Editor’s Note: The games for the Legends of the American Football League simulation are played on computer with Action! PC Football. The contests are played with the “coaching” by a human as well as computer simulation. One season per franchise was selected for league play with the 10 teams that merged with the National Football League competing for the championship. Stories from the action will appear on Press Room Pass each Sunday until the completion of the 14-week regular season and playoffs.

Tobin Rote threw three of his four touchdown passes in the first half to keep San Diego unbeaten as the Chargers won 27-21 over Miami.

The Chargers (6-0) are on top in the West Division ahead of Kansas City (3-3), which is in second place.

For the game, Rote completed 14-of-20 passes for 220 yards.

With scoring strikes from Rote to Lance Alworth (20 yards), Keith Lincoln (12 yards) and Don Norton (29 yards), the Chargers held a 20-0 advantage with 5:27 remaining in the second period.

The Dolphins got on the scoreboard with 22 seconds left in the half as Larry Csonka capped an 8-play, 71-yard drive with a 3-yard run to make it 20-7 at the intermission.

Miami closed the gap to 20-14 in the third quarter as Bob Griese found Howard Twilly for a 28-yard touchdown pass.

Both teams scored in the final stanza as the Chargers were able to maintain their distance to get the win.

Rote tossed a 12-yard strike to Alworth, while Griese found Doug Moreau from 18 yards.

The Chargers were able to run out the final 1:02 after Lincoln recovered the onside kick by the Dolphins.
