One season per franchise was selected for league play with the 10 teams that merged with the National Football League competing for the championship. Stories from the action will appear on Press Room Pass each Sunday until the completion of the 14-week regular season and playoffs.

Two quick touchdowns late in second quarter by the Oakland Raiders stunned the Muncipial Stadium crowd as the hometown Kansas City Chiefs were defeated 24-0.

The Raiders face their next challenge at the American Football League West Division championship game in San Diego against the Chargers.

George Blanda‘s 31-yard field goal gave the Raiders the lead early in the second period, but what happened just before halftime made the difference.

Daryle Lamonica tossed a 15-yard screen pass to Hewritt Dixon for a tocudown with 2:09 left before the intermission.

On Kansas City’s next play after the kickoff from its own 26, Robert Holmes fumbled on a draw and Bill Laskey scooped the ball off the ground and raced 32 yards for a touchdown that shocked the Chiefs and their fans.

Oakland’s opening drive in the second half took 11 plays covering 63-yards and lasted 7:25. When Larry Todd scored on a 1-yard dive, Kansas City’s hopes for a comeback seemed to be dashed.

Lamonica was just 9-of-22 for 117 yards and the one score. Dixon finished with 61 yards rushing with five catches for 57 and a touchdown.

Kansas City quarterback Len Dawson completed 11-of-29 passes for 146 yards. Running back Mike Garrett ran for 28 yards with five receptions for 52 yards.
