Coffman Advances to Quarterfinals at State

Union County’s Tucker Coffman reached the quarterfinals of the state wrestling meet after winning on Friday, Feb. 16.


INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. –
Night one of the IHSAA state finals in wrestling is in the books.

Union County’s Tucker Coffman wrote a winning chapter on Friday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse as he defeated ninth-seeded Mishawaka’s Benjamin Kensinger 9-0 in the opening round to advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals.

“I’m proud of his focus,” Union County Head Coach Dan Kelich said. “He battled through some nerves and jitters, but dominated.”

The No. 8 seed at 160, Coffman (42-6) takes on the top opponent in the bracket as he faces Jay County’s Mason Winner (45-2) on Saturday.

“He’s very focused on chasing the top of the podium,” Kelich said.

With the win on Friday, Coffman is guaranteed at least eighth place with an opportunity to compete in three matches.

The quarterfinals begin on Saturday at 9:30 a.m., with semifinals after that. The consolation rounds are at 5 p.m., with the finals at 7:30 p.m.

Winner beat No. 16 seed Wade Presson of Bloomington South 6-4 to advance.
