Before the Super Bowl 1964: Bills at Browns

CLEVELAND – Jim Brown dominated the action as the Cleveland Browns beat the Buffalo Bills 34-14 in the 1964 American Football League-National Football League Championship game.

Brown scored three touchdowns as he gained 217 yards of total offense for Cleveland. The running back had 136 yards rushing, whiel grabbing five passes for 81 yards.

On Cleveland’s opening drive, Frank Ryan tossed a screen pass to Brown and he ran 44 yards through the Bills defense for a score to set the tone for the affair with 11:38 on the clock in the first quarter.

The Browns added three touchdowns in the second quarter to build a 27-0 lead exciting the Municipal Stadium crowd.

Brown had a 4-yard run that was followed by Ryan 15-yard pass to Gary Collins that gave Cleveland a huge momentum advantage.

After Collins scored, Buffalo quarterback Jack Kemp fumbled after getting hammered by a blitzing Vince Costello. The Cleveland linebacker scooped up the ball and raced 36 yards for a touchdown.

Buffalo was able to respond as Elbert Dubenion had a 17-yard touchdown run late in the second period as the Bills closed the gap to 27-7 at the intermission.

The Bills had some hope after scoring on their first possession of the third frame as Kemp threw a 51-yard strike to Dubenion to cut Buffalo’s deficit to 27-14. However, that would be all Cleveland’s defense would allow the rest of the way.

Brown finished the scoring with his third touchdown of the contest on a 3-yard run late in the third quarter.
