1994 World Series: White Sox at Reds G4

Editor’s note: The 1994 playoff games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. The designated hitter will be used for the American League contests as well as when those teams are at home during the World Series. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.

Cincinnat’s Tom Browning won his second game of the 1994 World Series as the Reds defeated the Chicago 4-1 in the fourth contest of the best-of-seven series.

With the series tied a two games apiece, the Reds will have Jose Rijo (2-2) on the Riverfront Stadium mound as he looks to rebound from a loss in the second contest. Alex Fernandez (3-1) gets the ball for the White Sox in game five.

Browning (3-0) went 7⅓ innings allowing six hits with five walks and three strikeouts. Tim Raines hit a solo homer in the third for Chicago’s only tally.

In the top eighth, Browning got into trouble as the White Sox were hoping to rally.

Frank Thomas singled, but after Robin Ventura was out on a fly ball Browning walked Darrin Jackson and Lance Johnson to load the bases.

Hector Carrasco was summoned from the bullpen and he got Ron Karkovice on a pop up and Ozzie Guillen on a grounder and the threat was over.

Although Reds closer Jeff Brantley walked Raines, he fanned pinch-hitter Julio Franco and Thomas to earn his fourth save of the post-season.

Hal Morris gave the Reds an early lead with a RBI single in the first inning off Chicago starter Jack McDowell.

The Reds made it 3-0 in the second when Reggie Sanders and Deion Sanders each had a RBI double.

Cincinnati final run came in the sixth. Kevin Mitchell reached on a two-base error by Thomas at first base and then scored on a double by Bret Boone.

McDowell (1-3) tossed six innings giving up seven hits with a walk and a strikeout. Atlee Hammaker went the last two innings and struck out three.
