1990s Diamond Gems: 92 Blue Jays at 93 Phillies

Editor’s note: The 1990 Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. The designated hitter will be used for any contests involving American League teams when games are played at home. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.

Darren Daulton knocked in five runs as the 1993 Philadelphia Phillies advanced to semifinals of the 1990s Diamond Gems Tournament after a 7-3 win over the 1992 Toronto Blue Jays.

The Phillies will entertain the 1990 Cincinnati Reds in the next round of the tourney for a chance to play for the championship.

Daulton got things underway for the Phillies with a grand slam in the bottom of the first against Toronto starter Jack Morris.

Milt Thompson‘s RBI single in the fourth gave the Phillies and 4-0 advantage.

A two-run long ball by Devon White in the fifth off Philadelphia starter Danny Jackson to cut Toronto’s deficit to 5-2.

Toronto added what turned out to be the final run for the Blue Jays in the seventh on a RBI single by Manuel Lee.

Mickey Morandini added a RBI single for the Phillies in the seventh before Daulton drilled a solo shot in the eighth.

Jackson (1-0) went six innings to get the win as he allowed all of the Toronto runs on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Larry Andersen, Roger Mason and Mitch Williams each finished with a scoreless frame.

Morris (0-1) was tagged with the loss as he surrendered five runs on five hits in six innings with a pair of walks and four strikeouts. Dave Stieb gave up two runs on four hits in two innings.
