1970s Diamond Gems: 74 Dodgers at 79 Expos

Editor’s note: The 1970 Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. The designated hitter will be used for any games involving American League teams from 1973-79 when games are played at home. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.

Don Sutton tossed a three-hitter as the 1974 Los Angeles Dodgers advanced to the semifinals of the 1970s Diamond Gems Tournament with a 5-0 victory over the 1979 Montreal Expos.

With the win, the Dodgers will visit the winner of the 1971 Pittsburgh Pirates at 1975 Cincinnati Reds contest for a ticket to the championship game.

Sutton (1-0) left the mound with one out remaining in the ninth after walking Dave Cash and surrendering single to Andre Dawson.

Although it wasn’t a save situation, Dodgers manager Walter Alston wasn’t going to take any chances as he called Mike Marshall from the bullpen.

Marshall got Tony Perez to ground out, which ended the contest.

Sutton was perfect until allowing a single by Gary Carter in the fifth with one out. He also gave up a single to Warren Cromartie in the sixth as he finished with six strikeouts with a pair of walks.

The Dodgers grabbed an early lead as Willie Crawford knocked a run in the second inning off Expos starter Bill Lee. Crawford later scored on a single by Bill Russell as the Dodgers led 2-0.

A solo homer by Bill Buckner in the third added to the advantage for the Dodgers.

A RBI double by Davey Lopes with two outs in the fourth ended the day for Lee (0-1), who gave up four runs on nine hits with a strikeout.

Woodie Fryman got the final out of the fourth and then he added two more scoreless frames before Scott Sanderson took over.

After a perfect seventh, Sanderson was tagged by Ron Cey with a solo homer in the eighth for the final tally for the Dodgers.
