ANAHEIM, Calif. – Tommie Reynolds was just watching a baseball game and waiting for an opportunity.
California Angels manager Lefty Phillips came knocking in the bottom of the eighth inning with the game against the Chicago White Sox tied 1-1.
Reynolds walked to the batter’s box to hit for Angels starting pitcher Clyde Wright. Facing White Sox starter Tommy John with one out and runners on first and second Reynolds drilled a double that brought home two runs to the delight of the Anaheim Stadium crowd. After Wilbur Wood replaced John, Reynolds would score on a double by Sandy Alomar.
The end result of the outburst was a 4-1 victory by the Angels in opening round of the 1970 Strat-O-Matic Tournament setting up a visit to the Oakland A’s for California’s next contest.
Wright (1-0) would get the win over the Angels as he went eight inning giving up an unearned run on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Ken Tatum picked up a save as he gave up a hit in the ninth. John (0-1) was tagged with the loss allowing all four runs on 10 hits, while fanning four and walking just one.
The affair was scoreless until the fourth as both teams would come up with a run. Ed Herrmann‘s sacrifice fly produced an unearned run as the White Sox grabbed what turned out to be a brief advantage. With two outs in the bottom of the frame, Alomar singled and swiped second before a single by Roger Repoz tied the contest at 1-1.
