NEW YORK – The New York Yankees posted a 5-2 victory over the Washington Senators to advance in the 1970 Strat-O-Matic Tournament.
New York travels to Baltimore for the next round as the two teams battle for the American League East Division Championship.
The contest was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when the Yankees grabbed a 2-0 advantage against Washington starter Joe Coleman. Bobby Murcer‘s RBI double broke the ice before he would later score on an error by Senators shortstop Ed Brinkman.
In the sixth, the Yankees added to their lead with three runs. Danny Cater‘s double produced a pair of runs as Coleman’s day came to an end as he didn’t retire a batter. Horacio Pina replaced Coleman, but he couldn’t prevent New York from adding another run on a single by Ron Woods.
Frank Howard got the Senators on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh with a solo homer off New York starter Fritz Peterson.
Peterson got into trouble in the eighth as the Senators added a run on an error by New York shortstop Gene Michael. Jack Aker went to the mound and ended the Washington uprising as he fanned Brinkman and retired Del Unser on a ground out.
Peterson (1-0) got the win for New York as he was charged with both Washington runs on four hits with two strikeouts. Lindy McDaniel earned a save with a scoreless ninth.
Coleman went five frames giving up five runs on five hits with three walks and a strikeout. Pina allowed three hits in his two innings as Darold Knowles tossed a perfect ninth.
