SAN FRANCISCO – San Diego jumped out to an early lead to silence the crowd in Candlestick Park as the Padres were was able to hang on for a 5-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants.
After their first round win in the 1970 Strat-O-Matic Tournament, the Padres stay in California to visit the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Al Ferrara smacked a two-run homer to get things underway for the Padres in the top of the first off Giants starter Gaylord Perry (0-1).
San Diego added three more runs in the third to end Perry’s time on the mound. Cito Gaston began the two-out rally with a solo homer before Ollie Brown finished the outburst with a two-run double to make it 5-0.
Perry gave up six hits with two strikeouts and a walk in his three frames on the mound. Jerry Johnson, Ron Bryant and Don McMahon each worked two scoreless innings the rest of the way, but the Giants could only put together a pair of runs in the sixth off Pat Dobson, who tossed a complete game for the Padres as he allowed five hits, fanned seven and walked three.
Dobson (1-0) surrendered the two runs with out a hit as Ken Henderson knocked in the first one on a fielder’s choice. Dick Dietz added a sacrifice fly for the final San Francisco score.
