BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Jim Perry tossed a three-hitter as the Minnesota Twins beat the Milwaukee Brewers 2-0 to move on to the American League West Championship of the 1970 Strat-O-Matic Tournament.
The Twins will entertain the winner of the California Angels at Oakland Athletics contest in the next round at Metropolitan Stadium.
Perry (1-0) fanned seven and walked just one in his complete game effort.
Minnesota picked up its first run of the affair in the bottom of the third as Cesar Tovar singled with one out. After Tovar swiped second, Rod Carew singled to give the Twins a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth, Brant Alyea doubled and later scored on a single by Rich Reese that put the Twins on top by two runs, which turned out to be all Perry would need.
Brewers starter Lew Krausse (0-1) got the loss as he worked seven innings allowing seven hits with two run with eight strikeouts and a pair of walks. Ken Sanders tossed a scoreless eight for Milwaukee.
