1964 Tournament: Reds at Phillies

Editor’s note: The 1964 Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.

The Philadelphia Phillies are headed to the semifinals of the 1964 Tournament after beating the Cincinnati Reds 7-4.

Philadelphia is scheduled to entertain the Milwaukee Braves for an opportunity to play in the championship contest.

Chris Short (1-0) worked eight innings for get the win for the Phillies as he needed help from Jack Baldschun in the ninth. Short gave up six hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Baldschun walked Pete Rose before Tommy Harper hit into a double play that ended the game.

John Herrnstein‘s RBI single in the third put the Phillies in front 1-0 before the Reds had an answer in the fourth.

Deron Johnson smacked a double that scored two runs as the Reds took a 2-1.

However, Philadelphia responded in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good.

Clay Dalrymple‘s two-run single made it 3-2 Phillies, while Ruben added to the advantage with a sacrifice fly.

Johnny Callison increased Philadelphia’s margin with a two-run homer as Reds starter Jim Maloney was sent to the showers.

The Reds closed the gap over the next two frames as Johnny Edwards had a RBI ground out in the sixth and Don Pavletich drilled a pinch-hit homer that made it 6-4.

Joe Nuxhall took over on the mound for Cincinnati in the seventh as he followed Joey Jay.

Wes Covington knocked the final run for the Phillies with a single in the seventh.

Maloney (0-1) left with one out in the fifth as he surrendered six runs on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
