1964 Tournament: Mets at Pirates

Editor’s note: The 1964 Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.

Bob Veale tossed a four-hitter as the Pittsburgh Pirates opened the 1964 Tournament with an 8-1 victory over the New York Mets.

Next up for the Pirates is a visit to St. Louis to face the Cardinals in the second round. Bob Friend gets the ball for the Pirates, while the Cardinals counter with Bob Gibson.

Veale (1-0) gave up a solo homer to Jim Hickman in the third inning, which gave the Mets a 1-0 advantage. The Pirates lefty walked two and fanned nine his his complete game effort.

Mets starter Jack Fisher (0-1) blanked the Pirates through five innings until a RBI single by Dick Schoefield tied in the bottom of the sixth.

In the seventh, the Mets manager Casey Stengel used three pitchers as the Pirates sent 12 batters to the plate scoring six times.

Fisher allowed RBI singles to Schoefield and Roberto Clemente before heading to the showers.

Willard Hunter got one out, but he surrendered two-run double to Willie Stargell. Galen Cisco took over on the mound giving up a RBI single to Jim Pagliaroni before he walked Veale with the bases loaded.

Pittsburgh’s final tally came in the eighth when Bill Virdon smacked a solo homer off Cisco.
