It was Tony Cloninger‘s day as he led the Milwaukee Braves to a 7-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers in the championship game of the 1964 Tournament.

Cloninger (1-0) allowed just four hits with four walks and five strikeouts.

At the plate, Cloninger walked with the bases loaded in the third as the Tigers built a 5-0 advantage. He added a two-run single in the ninth to cap off the victory.

Milwaukee opened the contest with back-to-back RBI singles in the first inning off Detroit starter Dave Wickersham.

Lee Maye‘s run-scoring single in the second made it 3-0 Milwaukee before the Braves tagged Wickersham in the third.

Mickey Lolich retired the final two batters of the third as he took over for Wickersham (0-1), who left after surrendering five runs on seven hits with four walks and two strikeouts.

Joe Sparma and Fred Gladding shut down the Milwaukee offense before Terry Fox allowed the two runs in the ninth on Cloninger’s hit.

Detriot’s runs came in the third and sixth.

Jerry Lumpe had a sacrifice fly in the third, while Don Demeter hammered a solo homer in the sixth.
