1964 Tournament: Braves at Cardinals

Editor’s note: The 1964 Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.

A rally in the ninth by the St. Louis Cardinals fell short as the the Milwaukee Braves posted a 4-2 victory to advance to the semifinals of the 1964 Tournament.

With the victory, the Braves will travel to face the winner of Cincinnati Reds at Philadelphia Phillies affair for a chance to play for the tourney title

Braves starter Denny Lemaster retired Tim McCarver to lead off the bottom of the ninth before trouble began for the lefty.

Pinch-hitter Carl Warwick walked and Curt Flood followed with a double.

During a visit with Lemaster, Milwaukee manager Bobby Bragan pulled in the Braves infield before his pitcher faced left handed hitting Lou Brock.

Brock’s smash was fielded by second baseman Frank Bolling, which prevented Warwick from scoring.

Bragan then called righty Bobby Tiefenauer from the bullpen as Dick Groat stepped to the played with a chance to tie the affair with a hit.

Groat grounded out to Eddie Mathews at third and Tiefenauer eaned a save.

Lemaster (1-0) allowed seven hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts.

St. Louis starter Curt Simmons (0-1) was tagged with the loss as he surrendered six hits with three walks and five strikeouts in seven innings.

Cardinals Lead Early

Bill White‘s walk with the bases loaded in the first inning gave the Cardinals a 1-0 advantage.

In the second, St. Louis added another tally on a RBI single by Flood.

Milwaukee tied the contest with a pair of solo homers. Hank Aaron hit his blast in the fourth, while Ed Bailey‘s long ball was in the fifth.

The Braves took the lead in the eighth. Mathews singled and Lee Maye had a double to end the day for Simmons.

Barney Schultz fanned Joe Torre, but Rico Carty‘s two-run single put the Braves on top for good. Schultz got out of the jam and tossed a perfect ninth to give the Cardinals an opportunity to comeback.
